Every so often, a partnership comes along that just makes sense. For Protect Our Paths, this moment has finally arrived. After months of conversations, planning, and vision-sharing (our very first comms with SANParks started over five months ago!), we’re proud to officially announce that PoP is partnering with South African National Parks (SANParks) to bring our Custodians into some of the country’s most treasured public spaces.

Who is SANParks, and why is this partnership so meaningful

For many South Africans, SANParks is something we grow up with, but don’t fully recognise just how crucial their work is. As the national body responsible for managing South Africa’s system of protected areas, SANParks oversees 20+ national parks, safeguarding biodiversity, conserving ecosystems, and ensuring millions of visitors can responsibly experience the beauty of our country.

They protect our wildlife. They maintain our trails. They preserve cultural and ecological heritage. And their Rangers and teams work tirelessly-often behind the scenes-to keep these spaces safe, functional, and inspiring.

What this partnership means for PoP’s Custodians

By integrating our Custodians into SANParks networks and locations - beginning with the iconic Table Mountain National Park - we’re able to support and complement the work already being done by Park Rangers. Our Custodians will now be active in high-traffic public spaces within SANParks areas, helping keep pathways clean, protecting fragile natural spaces from litter, and elevating the visitor experience for both locals and tourists.

For the first time, PoP Custodians can operate with complete permission, structure, and collaboration inside SANParks-managed spaces. This opens new doors for impact, for employment, and for the people on the ground who take real pride in caring for the places they love.

The timing couldn’t be better: Festive season is coming

Cape Town and South Africa as a whole are about to welcome a wave of travellers, hikers, runners, beachgoers, and adventurers as the festive season approaches. High foot traffic always brings joy and energy -but it also brings strain on natural spaces and a dramatic spike in litter.

This partnership allows us to expand precisely when our presence matters most.

By building capacity in the run-up to peak season, we’re stepping in to support SANParks teams and create cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable outdoor experiences for all. Whether someone is summiting Lion’s Head at sunrise, strolling the boardwalks, or exploring the nooks of Table Mountain National Park, PoP Custodians will be there - quietly working, diligently caring, and helping to protect the places people love.

A shared vision for the future

Together with SANParks, we see an opportunity to uplift communities, protect natural spaces, and create more pathways for sustainable employment.

And while getting this partnership over the line took dedication, patience, and collaboration from all sides - the real work begins now.

Stay on the lookout for our new locations rollout and expansion online and don’t forget to play your part. It's as simple as picking up 1 piece of litter.
